DRFC - Review of the season - October
Continuing with the review of last season, we now enter October with Rovers going into the month on the back of five straight defeats and slipping into the relegation zone.
First up was another South Yorkshire derby, this time at Barnsley.
Rovers dominated for long periods and took a deserved first half lead when Brian Stock scored from the penalty spot.
The moment that changed the match was early in the second half when ex Rovers defender Darren Moore dragged down Lewis Guy, Moore was the last defender and was quickly shown a straight red card.
This somehow turned the match on its head and Barnsley were leading within ten minutes, Stephen Foster headed them level and then Campbell-Ryce was allowed to run the length of the pitch unchallenged before slotting past Sullivan from the edge of the area.
Things went from bad to worse with Jon Macken and Ian Hume scoring further goals to condemn Rovers to their heaviest defeat of the season.
Another international break gave Rovers the following weekend off, when they finally played again the following Saturday Rovers finally brought to an end a run of six straight defeats with a 0-0 home draw with Blackpool.
Rovers were soon back in action this time a midweek trip to free scoring Reading.
Once again Rovers put in a creditable performance against a team at the top end of the Division and came away with nothing to show for it.
Reading took the lead when Andre Bikey guided a header past Sullivan but Rovers stuck to their guns and deservedly equalised half way through the second half when Jos Van Nieuwstadt scored his first goal for the club.
Rovers fans celebrations hadn`t died down when Reading scored the winner, Kevin Doyle rose to head the Royals back into the lead and claim all three points.
Rovers were back on their travels again on the Saturday this time at Norwich City who had hammered leaders Wolves 5-1 in midweek.
Once again Rovers somehow came away with nothing when they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
Brian Stock put Rovers in the lead from the spot with just thirteen minutes remaining but couldn`t hold onto the lead in the final moments.
Firstly Sibierski was in the right place at the right time to bring the Canaries level, Sammy Clingan`s shot from inside the area was going well wide when it hit Sibierski on the head and looped over Neil Sullivan giving him no chance in the Rovers goal.
Leroy Lita scored the winning goal in injury time when he gave Sullivan no chance from inside the area to condemn Rovers to another pointless afternoon.
Rovers once again were in midweek action, they was meeting Barnsley for the second time in the month at The Keepmoat hopeful of taking all three points against a side who hadn`t won in Doncaster for over fourty years.
Once again Rovers enjoyed the vast majority of the match but failed to convert any chances into goals.
Barnsley completed a quick double over their neighbours when Jon Macken scored the only goal of the game just before half time.
Another disastrous month for Rovers results wise with the club now without a win in ten games and picking up only one point in the process.
The Barnsley defeat saw them slip to the foot of the table for the first time below Nottingham Forest. The most worrying statistic was the club had scored only nine goals in fourteen games with only two coming at home.
Could their fortunes start to change in November?
The review of November will follow next week.
