DRFC Season review 2008/09 April

DRFC Season review 2008/09 April

Doncaster moved into April knowing that one more victory from their final six games should definitely be enough to ensure another season in the Championship.

The month didn`t stay very well, Rovers lost their fourth game in a row at home against Watford 2-1. James Hayter scored Rovers consolation goal with five minutes remaining.

After four defeats in a row Rovers fans were beginning to feel a little nervous, that tension was lifted with a convincing 3-1 win away at Ipswich Town. Gareth Roberts set Rovers on their way with a cross/shot that nestled into the far corner of the net giving the Ipswich keeper no chance.
Ipswich were soon back on level terms through Owen Garven.

Rovers secured the three points their performance deserved with goals through Paul Heffernan and James Hayter in the final fifteen minutes.

Rovers were soon back in action on Easter Monday with a home clash against Preston North End.
Chris Brown who had enjoyed a loan spell at Rovers in their promotion season of 2003/04 opened the scoring for the visitors against the run of play halfway through the first half.

Neil Mellor doubled the lead for Preston with just under twenty minutes remaining to make it four home defeats in a row for Rovers.

Rovers made the long trip to Plymouth Argyle the following Saturday knowing that three points would ensure Championship survival.

Goals from John Spicer (his first for the club), James Hayter and Paul Heffernan secured the points for Rovers and make the long trip home a sweet one.

Rovers finished their home campaign against Crystal Palace and helped raise money for the NSPCC by wearing a one off white and green hooped kit that was to be auctioned off at events after the game.

Rovers finished the home season in style beating Palace 2-0, Dean Shiels scored his first goal for the club on the stroke of half time and James Hayter kept up his recent run in front of goal with the second, making it four in five games.

Rovers finished the month in thirteenth place level on points with near neighbours Sheffield Wednesday.

With one game remaining at Champions Wolverhampton Wanderers could Rovers finish the season in the top half of the table?

The review of May will follow with an overall review of the season.
