DRFC Ward likely to return to Coventry

Doncaster Rovers are not expecting to extend the loan deal of defender Elliott Ward when his loan expires after Saturday`s game with Derby County.

Ward has enjoyed a successful loan spell with the club and scored an unforgettable opener on his debut in the South Yorkshire derby at Sheffield Wednesday.

Rovers boss Sean O`Driscoll has admitted that the club cannot afford to keep him at the club and will probably have to wait until the summer, when Ward is out of contract at Coventry to renew their interests in the 25 year old.

Ward arrived at the club with only one fit central defender available, both Shelton Martis and Adam Lockwood have now returned to full fitness and Sam Hird has stepped into the side with commanding performances when needed in the past month.

The former West Ham defender has made five appearances during his loan spell and scored one goal.

He must be on a good wage at Coventry, O'Driscoll hoping to get him on the cheap in the summer!

A shame that we can't afford to keep him for the rest of the season, I am really dreading this summer, can we keep our top players?

Its hard to see how we can take the next step, if at the end of each season the best players are scooped up by the richer teams. Just the way it goes I suppose.
