DRFC Rovers release six players

Doncaster Rovers have announced that the club are not to offer new contracts to six players.

Goalkeeper Ben Smith, defenders Charlie Fisher and Sean McDaid, midfielder John Spicer and strikers Paul Heffernan and Lewis Guy have all been told they are free to find new clubs.

Smith made his first league start of the season in Sunday`s final game of the season at Swansea and kept a clean sheet.

With Neil Sullivan still going strong, chances have been few and far between for the 23 year old who had been with the club since 2006 and made just fourteen appearances.

Charlie Fisher signed his first full contract for the club last summer but failed to break his way into the first team this season.

Sean McDaid has been injury plagued for the past two years after suffering a knee injury in training in 2008. He made his only appearance for the club this season against Middlesbrough in January.

John Spicer signed for Rovers in the summer of 2008 and was a regular in the clubs first season in the Championship. He`s struggled to hold down a regular first team place this term and spent the last two months of the season on loan at League One Leyton Orient.

Forward Lewis Guy had been at the club six years and made over 150 appearances for the club.

He will forever be remembered as the first player to score for the Rovers in the Championship in over 50 years when he scored the only goal of the game in the 1-0 win at Derby County on the opening day of the 2008/09 season.

Guy has spent the last few months of this season at League One side Oldham Athletic working for his old Rovers boss Dave Penney who expressed a desire to keep Guy longer than the loan deal when it expired.

Popular striker Paul Heffernan joined Rovers in 2005 and he`s been Rovers top scorer in two of his five seasons at the club, this despite injuries forcing him to miss a large number of games.

In his first season, he netted 21 times and only injury stopped him from going very close to the 30 mark.

In his second season he played a big part in Rovers winning their first domestic trophy in their history when lifting the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy.

He scored twice in each game in the semi final against Crewe Alexandra and also scored in the final against Bristol Rovers.

He was also top scorer in Rovers first season back in the Championship with ten goals, this despite not becoming a regular in the side until around December.

Heffernan made just six starts this season and enjoyed loan spells at both Oldham Athletic and Bristol Rovers.

Finally realised that Lewis Guy is no good!!!

Sad to see Heffernan leave, never felt he was one of O'Driscoll's favourites especially after his sending off at Southend in the Play Offs.

Wouldn't mind seeing Lewis Guy with the Millers

Shame about mcdaid rated him when he was a youngster at Leeds

If McDaid can get himself fully fit he could do a good job for someone. Not sure about Guy, Caz, he runs around like an headless chicken
