DRFC Season review 2009/10 - May

DRFC Season review 2009/10 - May

Rovers went into May with just one game remaining at play off hopefuls Swansea City looking for a win to record a best finish to a season in over 100 years.

Sean O`Driscoll gave goalkeeper Ben Smith the opportunity to impress as he was handed the gloves for the final game of the season.

Smith put in an excellent display as he helped keep out Swansea in a 0-0 draw, a result that saw Blackpool edge the welsh side in the race for the final play off spot.

The point was enough to secure a top half finish for Rovers as they finished in twelfth spot, their highest finish in the league since 1953/54.

With the season finished, Rovers were quickly planning for the new season and arranged a pre season friendly at the Keepmoat against West Brom, who beat Rovers 3-2 at the Keepmoat in April to secure promotion to the Premiership.

Sean O`Driscoll announces his released list and lets six players go, Ben Smith, Sean McDaid, Paul Heffernan, John Spicer, Lewis Guy and Charles Fisher are all told they will not be offered new contracts.

O`Driscoll announced that he was offering new contracts to ten players, Neil Sullivan, Mark Wilson, Mustapha Dumbuya, Gary Woods, John Oster Adam Lockwood, Gareth Roberts James Hayter, Waide Fairhurst and Robbie Clark are all told they will be offered new deals.

Jason Shackell, who had spent the season on loan at Rovers, signs for Championship rivals Barnsley from under the nose of Sean O`Driscoll who had offered the player a deal at the Keepmoat.

Gareth Roberts decides not to sign a new contract with Rovers and joins fellow Championship side Derby County.

Brian Stock who has missed most of the second half of the season earns a call up to the full Welsh squad and plays in the 2-0 defeat in Croatia.

Rovers announce another pre season friendly, as in the past few seasons they will kick off with a game against a local side, this time at Askern Villa on July 7th.

Two more games are quickly added to the list with away games at non-league Quorn FC and a trip to Meadow Lane to face Notts County although the latter is postponed.

Neil Sullivan is the first player to sign a new contract with the club; the veteran keeper signs a new one-year deal.

Lewis Guy who was recently released signs for League One side MK Dons.

Adam Lockwood also agrees a new deal and signs a new two-year deal.

Rovers announce that they will be heading to Devon in July to take part in the week long South West cup.

Gary Woods becomes the third player to agree a new deal at the Keepmoat, the keeper puts pen to paper on a new one-year deal.

Sean McDaid who was released at the end of the season signs for League One side Carlisle United.

So another eventful season for Rovers comes to an and with the side once again proving critics wrong by more than matching the other sides in the Championship and can now look forward to a third season in the division and hopefully a higher finishing position.

A great season which saw them flirting with the play offs. I will openly admit that when Mills and Wellens left in the summer that Rovers would go down. The signing of Billy Sharp was inspirational and made the difference up front, I only wish he's been with Rovers 12 months earlier as I am sure they would have made the play offs that season.

I have to agree I was really worried after Mills and Wellens left last summer. Credit to O'Driscoll though he brought in Sharp and he was the real link that Rovers missed the previous season.
