DRFC 500 not out for Sullivan

DRFC 500 not out for Sullivan

Doncaster Rovers goalkeeper Neil Sullivan is set to make his 500th league appearance at the weekend against Bristol City.

Sullivan who turned 40 in February has enjoyed an illustrious career since making his debut for Wimbledon in the Premiership in1992.

The goalkeeper became a regular in the starting line up during the 1996/97 season, this despite being on the wrong end of a shot that beat him from the halfway line by Manchester United midfielder David Beckham on the opening day.

He also went on to represent Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in the top flight before joining Leeds United in the Championship in 2004.

After three years at Elland Road he joined Rovers initially on loan in 2007 after being deemed 'surplus to requirements` by the then Leeds boss Dennis Wise.

The veteran keeper made sixteen appearances for Rovers during his loan spell and helped them lift their first domestic silverware when they won the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy; it was also Sullivan`s first domestic honour.

Sullivan joined Rovers in the summer of 2007 and helped the club in his first full season, to win the League One Play off final, ironically against his former club Leeds in a 1-0 victory.

In his three full seasons at Rovers, Sullivan missed his first league game on the final day of last season after 140 consecutive appearances.

Sullivan has also represented Scotland on 28 occasions during a six year international career between 1997 and 2003.

Rovers boss Sean O`Driscoll speaking in the Sheffield Star was full of praise for his goalkeeper when he said; 'He came back, as he did last pre-season, fresh and wanting to do the work. You don't have to drag him or kick him to do training or to do extra or to get him in the gym.

'He's not going to run around football pitches like the rest of them, but he's in the gym on the rower and the stepper. He's got his programmes to do and he does them, so fair play to him; you only get out what you put in."

Sullivan started the season with a man of the match performance in Rovers 2-0 opening day victory at Preston. His performance also earned him a place in the Championship team of the week, which is chosen by the Press Association.

O`Driscoll thinks Sullivan is far from finished as well, 'It wouldn't surprise me to see him still playing in his mid-40s. I think he knows what he has to do." He continued.

Sullivan was out of contract in the summer and accepted a new one-year deal that was offered to him by the club.

He's still looking really good. I think this might be his last season at Rovers though.
