DRFC Former Rover beats Sharp to monthly award

Billy Sharp was beaten to the npower Championship Player of the month for January by a former Rovers player.

Richie Wellens, who is now plying his trade at Leicester City, took the award ahead of Sharp, who was on the short list alongside Shane Long -Reading and Scott Sinclair -Swansea City.

Wellens picked up the award after helping Leicester remain unbeaten during January.

Sharp enjoyed a great personal month scoring six goals for Rovers as the team struggled, picking up just the one victory against Scunthorpe United on New Years Day.

Nottingham Forest manager Billy Davies picked up the manager of the month in the Championship, after seeing his side win four and draw one of their Championship games during the month.

Sharp should have won it, to score the amount of goals he did whe Rovers was having a particularly bad month deserved the recognition.

He was always going to be overlooked by a player whose team did well during January no matter how much they deserved it.
