'If It's Football, It's Vital'

DRFC Season review - September

We now look back at September when Doncaster started the month in the top half of the table.

With an international break in place at the start of the month, Rovers had to wait until the 11th September for their first game of the month at Watford.

Simon Gillett and George Friend both scored their first goals for the club as the side battled to a 2-2 draw.

Rovers led at half time thanks to a well-worked goal, finished of by Gillett.

Two goals in seven minutes by Watford substitute Marvin Sordell, looked like seeing Rovers leave emptied handed but a scrambled goal from Friend deep into injury time ensured they returned to Doncaster with a point.

Rovers were quickly back in action on the Tuesday and a superb hat trick by James Coppinger saw off Norwich City 3-1 at the Keepmoat.

Rovers renewed acquaintances with Leeds United on the Friday night in front of the live Sky TV cameras.

It was the first time the two clubs had met since the League One play off final in 2008.

Despite both sides going close in an entertaining game, the game finished 0-0.

Rovers travelled to early season pace setters Queens Park Rangers next time out.

Despite dominating for long periods of the first half, Rovers were undone in the second half, losing 3-0.

Games were still coming thick and fast and Rovers travelled to Coventry three days later.

Rovers recovered from going behind very early on to equalise through Billy Sharp.

Coventry snatched all three points in the final minutes when Gary McSheffrey fired home for the home side.

It was a disappointing end to the month with Rovers picking up five points from a possible fifteen during the month.

Rovers finished the month in fourteenth place with twelve points from nine games.

Next week we will be looking back at October when Rovers spoilt what was going to be a good month, by letting a 3-1 lead slip at Reading, eventually losing 4-3.

This month goes to show just what could have been, made promoted Norwich City look very ordinary.
