DRFC Comprehensive win for Rovers

DRFC Comprehensive win for Rovers

Doncaster Rovers finished their pre season campaign with a comprehensive win at Grimsby Town.

First half goals from Billy Sharp and James Coppinger and a first for the club by James Baxendale in the second half secured the win.

Rovers put out a strong starting eleven for their final pre season game before the new season.

Included in the starting eleven was a new trialist, Giles Barnes who was released by West Bromwich Albion at the end of last season.

James Coppinger had an early chance for Rovers but fired wide from distance.

Rovers next chance fell to Kyle Bennett who saw his shot pushed away for a corner.

Billy Sharp also saw a shot blocked as Rovers controlled the opening half hour.

Rovers finally took the lead with just five minutes of the first half remaining.

Bennett teed up Sharp who gave McKeown no chance in the Grimsby goal.

It was quickly 2-0; Bennett was again involved, setting up Coppinger to fire home.

Rovers went in at the break deservedly two goals to the good.

Anthony Church had an early chance in the second half for Grimsby but substitute goalkeeper Gary Woods made the save.

Grimsby had started the second half the better and Hearn headed just wide from a corner.

Substitute Rowan Vine almost made it three but he was thwarted by a good save by McKeown who pushed it out for a corner.

From the resulting corner, Ryan Mason fired wide from the edge of the area.

Vine had another chance to open his Rovers account during pre season but shot straight at McKeown.

Woods was forced into a good save after Hearn got past Radford in the Rovers defence.

James Baxendale scored his first goal in Rovers colours after being released by Leeds United in the summer.

The youngster picked the ball up well inside his own area and forged forward. He eventually played a one/two with Lander on the edge of the area before stroking the ball past McKeown, to make it 3-0 inside the final ten minutes.

Chris Brown had a good chance to open his Rovers account but his header took a deflection and went wide of the post.

Brown`s effort was to prove the last chance of the game

A good win for Rovers has they now prepare for their opening game of the season next weekend at Brighton and Hove Albion.
