DRFC Giles Barnes Q & A

DRFC Giles Barnes Q & A

Vital West Brom editor Baggy Boy has been put on the spot and answered a few questions about Rovers latest signing Giles Barnes.

Barnes has signed for Rovers on a short-term deal after being released by West Brom at the end of last season.

Were you disappointed to see him leave?
He never really set the world alight after joining, and obviously didn't impress Hodgson, but I was pleased when we grabbed him. I thought he would suit us down to the ground and the kid is obviously talented, so on a personal point I'm disappointed to see him leave because I expected more. But it just wasn't to be.

Where do you think it went wrong for him at West Brom?
Different fans will have different ideas on why it didn't work out, injuries, consistency, difficulty stepping up to the Premier League, a club that just didn't fit him - it could be any of them or none of them. He certainly didn't ever recapture the form that first brought him to every bodies attention at Derby, and had he of course, I'd guess things would've worked out differently for him. How much was down to the injuries is open for debate.

What are his strength`s and weaknesses?
Strengths are clearly an eye for a ball and he's good attacking player, what lets him down in my view is tracking, drifting out of games and I've never really thought he was up for a battle in midfield when things got tough and you needed people to dig in.

That's often the price you pay for a player who can make things happen in the final third though, and although it never worked out really, we did benefit from his attacking element in our promotion push when he returned to action.

Thanks Baggy Boy for your answers.

Lets hope he can stay fit, a fully fit Barnes should be playing in the Premier League.
