DRFC Former Rovers on the move

Former Doncaster Rovers midfielder Sean Thornton has signed for Welsh Premier League side Aberystwyth Town.

The 28 year old has signed for Aberystwyth Town on a short-term deal until the New Year.

Thornton spent two seasons with Doncaster Rovers and was part of the squad that won their first domestic trophy in their history in 2007 when they defeated Bristol Rovers in the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy final.

He was also part of the side that enjoyed a successful run in the Carling Cup competition in 2005/06. Rovers reached the quarter final, before agonisingly losing out to Arsenal on penalties, after the gunners equalised in injury time at the end of extra time.

Rovers defeated Premier League sides Manchester City and Aston Villa on their way to the last eight and Thornton scored one of the goals of the season in the 3-0 demolition of Villa.

After his release from Rovers, Thornton joined Leyton Orient, where he spent three years before being released in May 2010.

Thornton was rumoured to have signed for top Ukrainian side Metalist Khairkiv (subject to a visa) in July in a three year deal.

Continuing with a former Rovers link, striker Gareth Taylor has left Wrexham to take up a coaching role at big spending Premier League side Manchester City.

The 38 year old will take up a post nurturing players from Dubai and he will work alongside another former Rovers striker in Neil Roberts.

What a way to throw away what could have been a great career. I wish him all the best and good luck.

Will always remember his goal against Villa. Shame he couldn't concentrate on football.
