DRFC Sharp thanks football fans

DRFC Sharp thanks football fans

Doncaster Rovers striker Billy Sharp thanked fans around the world after the support shown to him this week following the tragic death of his son last weekend.

Louie Jacob Sharp died last Saturday, just two days after his birth and Sharp has shown tremendous courage and character to return to playing.

He has received support from all around the world and he was overwhelmed by the support shown to him by opposition Ipswich Town fans in Rovers 3-2 win at Portman Road on Saturday.
Sharp scored Rovers second goal to put them two nil ahead and it was greeted by applause from all four sides of the ground. Sharp has been amazed by the response and admits the fans at Ipswich brought a lump to his throat with their reaction. Speaking on the Doncaster Rovers official website, Sharp said, "I`d like to thank everybody across the world for the messages I have received, It really means a lot.
"The Ipswich fans were fantastic, I had a lump in my throat when I scored and they did that for me, they didn`t have to do that, I am an opposing player. I`d like to thank them for showing that respect to me."

Sharp played in Tuesday night`s defeat to Middlesbrough, just three days after the death of Louie and he opened the scoring that night and dedicated the goal to his son, when he lifted his shirt to show a sign reading. 'That`s for you son`.

Ipswich fans also applauded Sharp off the field when he was substituted in the 69th minute of the game.

The funeral of Louie took place on Wednesday and the squad of Doncaster Rovers, who attended the funeral supported Billy and his partner Jade.

I think it shows what a brilliant football community there still is. Football in this country always gets knocked but we have the best fans in the world. Both Middlesbrough and Ipswich have been brillian this week for Billy Sharp. It will be a long road but hopefully this as helped a little bit, Billy and his partner.

Thanks to everyone who has shown Billy suppoort this week. What Ipswich did on Saturday was unbelievable. You were getting beat 2-0 by the bottom of the league but you showed fantastic support by applauding Billy. By the way, your still not having him ;-)
