DRFC Saunders -We came close to some big names

Doncaster Rovers boss Dean Saunders says the club came close to a number of other big name signings this week.

Saunders brought in Habib Beye - Aston Villa, Marc Antoine Fortune - West Brom and Herold Goulon - Blackburn Rovers, but a number of high profile players came very close to joining the club.

Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Saunders said, "You wouldn`t believe some of the players we tried to get in, and nearly said yes, but I am happy with the signings."

Rovers were also linked with free agent Bolo Zenden and Chelsea defender Paulo Ferreira who both have World and European championship experience.

The club were also linked with a move to bring former Rovers favourite Paul Green back to the club on loan.

Green joined Derby from Rovers in 2008 and was a regular for both Derby and Republic of Ireland until suffering a cruciate and mediate ligament injury that ruled him out for almost the whole of 2011.

He has just returned to full fitness at Pride Park.

Saunders also commented on the wages that the club are paying the new signings.

Rovers are working alongside football agent Willie McKay, in bringing in new signings on short-term deals. The players are paying the players a fraction of what they are on at their parent clubs, in an attempt to put them in the shop window and a big move.

Saunders commented on the wages they are paying Blackburn midfielder, "Goulon is on big wages at Blackburn and he will end up getting less than the kit man is getting,. Saunders said."

The three new signings join Pascal Chimbonda, El Hadji Diouf, Herita Ilunga and Carl Ikeme at the club since the arrival of Saunders and McKay in September.
