DRFC Saunders close to sorting out new Diouf deal

Doncaster Rovers boss Dean Saunders says he is close to agreeing a new deal with El Hadji Diouf to remain at the club.

Diouf signed a short-term deal with the club, keeping him at the Keepmoat until January.

The former African footballer of the year is reported to have been in negotiations with big spending Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala about a move to them when his deal with Rovers runs out.

The big spending Russian side made headlines in August when they signed Samuel Eto`o on a contract reportedly worth 20 million a season.

Despite this, Saunders says he came close to sorting out a new deal with Diouf. Speaking on Radio Sheffield, Saunders said, "I`m hoping to keep him. I nearly came to an agreement with him last night (Friday)."

Diouf made a great start to his Rovers career, scoring twice in his second game at Ipswich Town to help Rovers secure a surprise win.

Saunders joked that after the win over Leicester City this weekend, he will speak once again with chairman John Ryan whilst he could be feeling generous.

"I`m hoping to push the boat out now and see the chairman because we have won, he might be a bit more generous," continued Saunders.

Diouf is currently on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, although Rovers are hoping he will be fit to return for the busy festive period.

Rovers seem to have turned the corner without him in the side so not such a big loss if he doesn't stay. would sooner see Fortune stay for longer
