DRFC Saunders - Players are ringing me
Doncaster Rovers boss Dean Saunders says he has players ringing him wanting to join the club as they continue to bring in big name players.
Rovers are working alongside football agent Willie McKay in bringing in experienced players to the club who are struggling for a regular place in their side or are out of contract in a hope to put themselves back in the shop window.
Since Saunders and McKay arrived at the club, they have signed El Hadji Diouf, Pascal Chimbonda and Lamine Diatta on short-term deals who are all experienced Premier League and international footballers.
They have also brought in on loan, Herita Ilunga, Habib Beye, Chris Kirkland, Marc Antoine-Fortune, Herold Goulon and Carl Ikeme who all have similar pedigree.
With the January transfer window less than a fortnight away from reopening, Saunders already says the club have 'irons in the fire` on a number of possible signings and he says he has also got players ringing him as they want to join the club and be part of the Rovers revolution in the transfer market.
Speaking on Radio Sheffield, Saunders said, "We have lots of irons in the fire and there are lots of players wanting to join us now.
"We are getting phone calls from players. They have seen the types of players we have got.
"Having Diouf, Beye, Ilunga and Chimbonda, there are players who are thinking I will come and join and we are managing to do it without spending any money."
All the players signed by Saunders are due to leave Rovers by early February and Saunders faces a busy January as he continues to build a squad good enough to move away from the relegation zone.
Rovers have now won two of their last three games against clubs who are in or expected to be in the promotion shake up at the end of the season.
A Billy Sharp goal was enough to beat table toppers Southampton 1-0 at the Keepmoat at the start of the month.
They were then unlucky to lose to a late goal at Birmingham City who were plying their trade in the Premier League last season and have competed well in this seasons Europa League after winning the Carling Cup last season.
Rovers had actually taken the lead through a first goal for the club by one of Saunders loan signings from West Brom, Marc Antoine-Fortune but a defensive mistake let Birmingham back into the game and a goal two minutes from time won the game for the midlands club.
Big spending and pre-season favourites Leicester were the last to visit the Keepmoat this weekend and once again, Billy Sharp was the Rovers hero scoring twice in a 2-1 win.
