DRFC Sharp too expensive for Jewell

Ipswich Town boss Paul Jewell says Doncaster Rovers striker Billy Sharp is out of their price range.

Jewell tried to sign Sharp in the summer along with fellow Rovers player James Coppinger for a combined £2.6 million.

Rovers chairman John Ryan stated earlier this week that the club have an agreement with Sharp, which allows him to talk to other clubs if they make a bid of £3 million.

Jewell says that at that price it is out of their price range.

Speaking in the East Anglian Daily Times , Jewell said, "We went for Billy in the summer, but I think at that price he`s definitely out of our price range.

"I might be wrong, but I don`t think there are too many Championship clubs that are going to pay £3 million for a player at this moment in time. I know West Ham paid a lot for Kevin Nolan in the summer, but it`s pretty rare you get such big fees in the Championship."

Southampton offered in excess of £3 million for Sharp in the summer but Sharp decided to stay with Rovers where he is once again enjoying a successful season in front of goal.

Sharp has netted nine times in fifteen appearances for Rovers so far this season and he is averaging a goal every other game since he arrived at the Keepmoat, initially on loan at the start of the 2009/10 season.

The clubs record transfer fee has now netted 40 times in 81 appearances for Rovers in his two and a half seasons with the club.

The 25 year old is also reported to be a target for Premier League side Wigan Athletic in January.
