DRFC Coppinger - Cup can work two ways
Doncaster Rovers midfielder James Coppinger says the FA Cup can work two ways in the second half of the season.
Rovers go into their third round tie at the Keepmoat this weekend against Notts County free from the pressures of the championship.
They are still firmly embroiled in a relegation battle despite winning their last three games at the Keepmoat.
Coppinger says the priority is to retain their championship status this season but an FA Cup run could also breed confidence and help with league form.
Speaking in the Sheffield Star, Coppinger said, "When you are playing in the Championship and fighting for your lives, like we are at the moment, the priority is the league.
"The FA Cup can work in two ways. It can become a distraction - particularly if you get things like replays - or it can be a competition where you forget about the league and play with less pressure.
"A good FA Cup run can also lead to better results in the league."
Rovers failed to get past the third round last season when they were defeated 5-0 by Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers in a replay at Molineux.
They have only gone as far as the fourth round twice in recent history. They reached the fourth round in 2008 and 2009 following their return to the second tier of English football when they entered the competition in the third round.
The furthest Rovers have ever gone in the competition is the fifth round when they reached it four times in the space of five seasons during the early 1950`s.
