DRFC Saunders - Sharp to lead us to safety

Doncaster Rovers boss Dean Saunders is hoping that Billy Sharp will stay with the club until at least the end of the season and lead Rovers away from the relegation zone.

Sharp continues to be linked with a host of clubs and is believed to have turned down the opportunity to join Leicester City after the two clubs agreed a fee for the player.

The clubs leading goalscorer returned to the side in the 0-0 draw with Cardiff City at the weekend and Saunders says Sharp has indicated that he wants to stay with Rovers.

Speaking on Radio Sheffield, Saunders said, "I think Billy will be staying with us until the end of the season, I am hoping he will. Without actually nailing it down, I think he has indicated he will stay but if Man United comes in for him in the next week or so, I think he will change his mind.

"You never count your chickens but hopefully he will stay with us. He can win us six or seven games, if he wins us six or seven games its worth all the money in the word.

"I think he wants to stay and help us get out of the trouble we are in and if he scores ten goals between now and the end of the season I would take that and we would win five or six of them."

Sharp has already netted ten times in nineteen appearances this season and is pivotal to Rovers survival this season, with the club offering him a substantial pay increase and new deal to remain at the Keepmoat.

The striker failed to score on Saturday but could have quite easily have won Rovers a penalty late on in the game when he went down under a challenge from Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall.

Rovers remain second from bottom in the championship despite making it five games unbeaten at home with the draw against promotion chasing Cardiff City.

They now prepare themselves for a massive game at Bristol City this weekend, with the robins in twentieth place.

A win for Rovers would take them to within a point of City, although Rovers have lost their last five away games in a row.

I really hope he stays. This has been the longest transfer window ever and we are only halfway through it.
