DRFC Sharp completes Southampton move

Doncaster Rovers striker Billy Sharp has signed for Southampton on a three and a half year deal after completing his medical at St Mary`s.

Sharp has signed for an undisclosed fee after Southampton were allowed to speak to Sharp after triggering a release clause in his contract.

The 25 year old was once again the leading goalscorer for Rovers this season having netted 10 times in 20 games.

He originally joined Rovers on a season long loan from Sheffield United in 2009 and was the clubs leading goalscorer with 15 goals.

His form persuaded Rovers to break the clubs record transfer fee when they paid 1.15 million for the striker the following summer.

Sharp again led the way for Rovers last season when he netted 16 times.

He netted 41 times for Rovers in 86 games and he is currently shortlisted for the Football League goal of 2011 for his goal against Middlesbrough in November.

Vital Doncaster would like to thank Billy for two and a half wonderful seasons at the Keepmoat and wish him all the best for the future.

Good luck to Billy Sharp. A very sad day for Rovers fans but no one could be grudge him a move. Three times he turned down more money to stay at the Keepmoat and has never given anything less than 100% in two and a half years. I will be looking out for Southampton's results and hope he gets to the Premier League with them. Sharp and Lambert up front is an awesome forward line.

He will be sorely missed. Not the new style of footballer who is a mercenary and wanted big bucks. He wanted happiness which is why he signed and stayed at Rovers for two and a half years. Good luck Billy you deserve it.

Says a lot to me how well his move has gone down with your fans. Sad at the loss but genuinely pleased for the player. Speaks volumes about your club and the fans. Hope it doesn't stop you from staying up. Good luck for the rest of the season.
SFC Forever
Good luck to him, and thanks for the last two and a half years. Hope he gets his wish for premier league football, and that we find someone who can step up and help us avoid the drop.
