DRFC Saunders - We should have won

Doncaster Rovers boss Dean Saunders said he felt the side should have won after coming from behind to claim a point at promotion chasing West Ham.

Rovers looked like being overrun in the first ten minutes as West Ham had a goal disallowed and also hit the crossbar, before finally making the breakthrough after nine minutes through Kevin Nolan.

James Coppinger equalised for Rovers with just seventeen minutes remaining and El Hadji Diouf almost won the game for Rovers in the closing minutes only for Robert Green to deny him with a great save.

Saunders felt a draw was the least they deserved in a game where it was hard to tell who was second top and who was second bottom.

Speaking on Radio Sheffield, Saunders said, "We should have won, again. We missed chance after chance. Bagayoko had a free header, Giles had a free header, Dioufy - the goalkeeper makes an unbelievable save and they have scrambled a couple away in the second half.

"I cannot complain, we played really well. We started the game terrible, although they started the game well.

"We changed the shape and after we changed the shape we played some great football.

"We dominated the game second half against a really good team and a difficult place to come but we will take a point."

The draw made it four games unbeaten, Rovers best run of results in sixteen months and Saunders said the side made him proud in the second half as they dominated the multi-million pound West Ham side. "The way we played in the second half I was proud. I was proud to stand there and watch," added Saunders.

Saunders says the side are being to put a run of consistent performances together as they try to drag themselves out of the relegation places. "We have been playing well for a long time without getting the right results. We are now consistent and we are starting to put consistent performances together," continued the Rovers boss.

Rovers still have six games to come this month, starting with Reading at the Keepmoat on Tuesday night.

This is followed by two more crucial home games against Derby County and Millwall.

Despite a well-earned point at West Ham, Rovers are now four points from safety after Nottingham Forest beat Millwall 3-1 at the City Ground.

Bristol City are now the side to chase after they lost 2-1 at home to Cardiff City.

Coventry also picked up a valuable point at the weekend, holding promotion chasing Birmingham City to a 1-1 draw at the Ricoh.

Portsmouth are beginning to look doomed after they were beaten 2-0 at Brighton and they are now eight points from safety.
