DRFC Old boy comes back to haunts Rovers

Doncaster Rovers survival hopes took a huge dent with a 2-1 home defeat to Derby County.

Rovers came into the game on the back of a five match unbeaten run and had just held both West Ham and Reading to draws but it was an old boy who came back to haunt Rovers.

Gareth Roberts made over 170 appearances for Rovers before leaving to join Derby in 2010 and it was his goal early in the second half, his first for Derby that clinched the three points.

Derby had taken an early first half lead when Theo Robinson beat Rovers keeper Carl Ikeme to the ball outside the area and he chipped the ball into an empty net.

Rovers best chance of the first half fell to on loan striker Frederic Piquionne but his powerful header was straight at goalkeeper Frank Fielding.

Roberts doubled Derby`s lead early in the second half after a quick interchange of passes to fire past Ikeme.

Rovers were given a lifeline when El Hadji Diouf`s swivel and shot beat Fielding but they could not find an equaliser.

The result leaves Rovers second bottom, four points from safety and they now face a must win game against Millwall at the Keepmoat on Tuesday night.

Donny were nervous from the word go, with "up an unders" and back passing to Ikeme at every little challenge, it was not the team we have been watching lately. Dioufy tried his best to rally them, running all over the field and scoring a beautiful goal. There was still time to draw level but the fight and determination was missing. Until the numbers say differently we are still in there with a chance but they have got to believe in themselves, it`s got to come from the heart, not from the mouth of Saunders !

I think the effort put into the West Ham and Reading games is starting to show. Got to get them up for Tuesday night. If we don't win on Tuesday then I am resigning myself to League One.
