DRFC Former Rovers duo enjoy cup success

Former Doncaster Rovers duo Dean Shiels and Paul Heffernan are tonight celebrating winning the Scottish League cup with Kilmarnock after upsetting the odds to beat Celtic in the final.

The pair both played the 90 minutes as Dieter van Tornhout scored the only goal of the game with just six minutes remaining to clinch the trophy for the first time in Kilmarnock`s history.

Both players were doubts for the final. Shiels, whose father Kenny is the club manager had missed the previous two games through suspension and Heffernan was struggling through injury.

The duo both started and both Heffernan and Shiels tested Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster in the first half as Kilmarnock more than matched their opponents.

Shiels moved to Kilmarnock in January from Rovers after having his contract terminated by Rovers by mutual consent, after enjoying a successful loan spell at Rugby Park in the first half of the season.

The Northern Ireland international made 88 appearances for Rovers during two years at the Keepmoat.

Heffernan enjoyed a successful five-year stint with Rovers and helped the club win the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy and promotion to the championship during his stay.

The striker netted 53 goals for Rovers in 160 appearances and he became a huge fans favourite before being released by the club in the summer of 2010.

After an unsuccessful season with Sheffield Wednesday, Heffernan moved north of the border to join Kilmarnock at the start of this season.

The 30 year old has netted 13 times in 30 appearances so far this season.
