Doncaster Rovers boss Dean Saunders says he has held talks with Hull City midfielder James Harper about a move to the Keepmoat Stadium.
Saunders is looking to build a squad capable of making a quick return to the championship following their relegation to League One and he is looking to find the right players on a tight budget.
Speaking in the Hull and East Riding newspaper, Saunders said, 'James is a player I've spoken to.
"I like to meet players and talk to them eye to eye to see if they are as determined as I am.
'It's important I find the right players to take this club forward. I don't want anyone coming here for the ride.
'I've got three lists of players that I am working from over the summer: expensive, not so expensive and cheap.
'I've got to be patient because we all know what the situation is with the wage bill."
Harper is out of contract at the KC Stadium this summer and he has struggled with injuries since signing for the tigers in 2010.
Harper came through the youth ranks at Arsenal without making a senior appearance. He joined Cardiff City on loan before signing for Reading in League Two in 2001.
He enjoyed nine years at the Madejski Stadium, helping Reading climb through the leagues and spend two seasons in the Premier League.
The midfielder was an ever present in their two seasons in the top flight during the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons.
After almost 350 appearances for the royals, he joined Sheffield United, initially on loan in September 2009 before making the move permanent and spending the remainder of the season at Bramall Lane where he made 38 appearances.
Harper moved to Hull in the summer of 2010 and he made 29 appearances in his first season.
Last season, as well as his brief substitute`s appearance against Nottingham Forest in the championship, he made just one start, in the Carling Cup against Macclesfield in August.
The experienced 31 year old made five appearances for Wycombe Wanderers on loan during January and February before returning to Hull.
Doncaster Rovers have stated on their official twitter feed that they have made two bids for unnamed players.
