DRFC Rovers to slash player budget

Doncaster Rovers co-owner Dick Watson says a number of the high earners at the club will need to be sold this summer as the club looked to slash their player budget.

Following Rovers relegation to League One, the income of the club will drop by £6 million from £10 million to £4 million and Watson says the high earners will need to move on.

Watson speaking in the Doncaster Free Press said, "Our business plan calls for some of the players on the biggest wages to move on and be replaced by others.

"Some of the players are on good Championship salaries.

"The players have ambitions as well and they`d rather be playing in the Championship rather than League One."

Rovers announced a retained list of just twelve players at the end of last season, all players still under contract with the club.

Kyle Bennett, Habib Beye, Chris Brown, James Coppinger, George Friend, James Husband, Shelton Martis, James O`Connor, Tommy Spurr, Brian Stock, Neil Sullivan, Gary Woods and Martin Woods are the twelve still under contract and Rovers are expected to listen to offers for the high earners in the squad.

George Friend has already been linked with move away from the Keepmoat with Middlesbrough leading the chase for the Rovers player of the season.

So far, Rovers have added just midfielder David Syers from Bradford City to their squad ahead of the new season whilst it has been reported this week that they have missed out on a number of targets.

Huddersfield Town midfielder Gary Roberts and Stevenage duo Jon Ashton and Mark Roberts have all been linked with a move to the Keepmoat.

Huddersfield winger Roberts joined Swindon Town whilst it is reported that Stevenage turned down Rovers offer for both Jon Ashton and Mark Roberts.

Players will come to the end of their contracts next week and the summer transfer window will open, making July a very busy month for managers up and down the country.

We just want to make sure we have 20-25 good signings rather than the 40 odd we had last season and half of them never saw the first team.
