DRFC Rovers land international winger

Doncaster Rovers have signed Welsh international winger David Cotterill on a two year deal.

The 24 year old has signed on a free transfer after coming to the end of his short-term deal at Barnsley at the end of last season.

Cotterill started his career at Bristol City and he made his debut when just 16 years old.

After making 66 appearances for Bristol City, he joined Premier League side Wigan Athletic for a deal worth in the region of £2 million in 2008.

The Welsh international struggled to break into the Wigan side, making just 21 appearances in two seasons before signing for Sheffield United after a successful loan spell.

After just under two years at Bramall Lane, where he made 64 appearances, Championship promotion chasers Swansea City signed him in a deal worth £600,000.

The winger made 24 appearances in his first season with the Welsh club, who narrowly missed out on a play-off place after being held to a goalless draw at the Liberty Stadium on the final day of the season by Doncaster Rovers.

Cotterill made 16 appearances for Swansea in the first half of their promotion season of 2010/11 before being loaned out to Portsmouth in January 2011.

He made 15 appearances for Portsmouth, where he spent the remainder of the season.

Cotterill failed to break into the Swansea side following their promotion to the Premier League last season and he was released from his contract in February 2012.

He was snapped up by Barnsley manager Keith Hill on a short-term deal until the end of the season and he made 11 appearances for Barnsley, scoring one goal.

He has also represented Wales at three levels and he has made 19 appearances for the full international side, netting the one goal against Luxembourg in August 2010 in a 5-1 win.

Cotterill is Rovers second signing of the summer, following the signing of David Syers from Bradford City earlier this month.

I think this is a fantastic signing for League One. I can't believe he is still only 24.

He needs to refind the sort of form he showed when he first burst onto the scene.
