DRFC Bolton and Burnley fans view - Robbie Blake

DRFC Bolton and Burnley fans view - Robbie Blake

Vital Doncaster Rovers have been given the insight into new signing Robbie Blake from the fans of both Bolton Wanderers and Burnley.

Blake has spent the last two seasons at Bolton, where he made just 15 appearances and most of those came from the bench.

Steve, the editor at Vital Bolton answered the following questions.

Best position
It is difficult to say where Robbie's best position is. As a Bolton player, he was used in attacking midfield but sparingly in most cases. Most Bolton fans consider that he was too old when he joined the club and this was borne out by the amount of times that he actually played. If pressed, just behind the two attackers would be his best position.

Strengths and weaknesses
As for his strengths and weaknesses, his age inevitably counted against him, at least as the Premier League went. Over the two years, he was with Bolton he didn't really play a lot, mostly League Cup games, so it is difficult to gauge what his best and worst facets are. He scored an amazing free kick in a Premier League game a couple of seasons ago, so his free kick ability would probably have to go down as a strength.

Where did it go wrong for him at Bolton
It didn't really go wrong for him at Bolton. He just wasn't used much as there were better players in front of him. Indeed, he was probably there a year longer than he should have been, being offered a new contract last season when most thought he would be released. He ended up playing one more game. In a sense, it went right for him, just not for the club.

Injuries
Due to not playing much, it was difficult for him to pick up an injury and he was always in contention for a place, even if he was never selected. Having said that, the day he was released was a year too late and no one was disappointed to see him go.

Blake had a much better time at Burnley, where he had two spells as a player.

The 36 year old made 282 appearances, scoring 72 goals in his two spells and he helped the club reach the Premier League in 2009. Blake marked the return to the top flight for Burnley with the side`s first goal, when they famously defeated Manchester United 1-0 in their first home game.

The fans at Vital Burnley said the following:

Claretdale

Robbie can be brilliant. He can beat a man for fun, but sometimes will try to beat the same man too many times (in my opinion).

I cannot recall him missing many games through injury in either of his spells with us.

In his second spell with us, he had moved deeper and spent the majority of the season on the left of midfield. If this is how Saunders plans to play him, I do not expect many goals (although he should get some assists).

Robbie has not played a lot in the last two years and my worry would be about his fitness and how much he has left in his legs.

How many games he will manage in the season, I am not sure. During 2008/09/10, I do not think he completed many full 90 minutes (although I may be wrong). If he still has his legs, you could have yourself a player who can turn a match in your favour with one moment of genius.

Bernie Lee

Strengths and weaknesses?

Intelligent player with good balance and quick feet , lacks pace and father time is hot on his heels.

Did he have many layoffs through injury?
Not really the injury prone type.

Do you think he will score many goals in League One?
Likely create more than he will score, great with a dead ball.

VinRouge
Strengths and weaknesses?

Keeping the bench warm, pies.

Did he have many layoffs through injury?
Not that I recall.

Do you think he will score many goals in League One?
No but I think he will still be creative and a massive dressing room favourite as he is a character.

Did you have any songs for Blake?
Whenever an opponent takes a free kick and misses, we would sing, 'You're not Robbie Blake, you're not Robbie Blake, you're not Robbie, you're not Robbie, you're not Robbie Blake." With reference to his good free kicks of course.

Grimsby Claret
Robbie Blake at his best is spellbinding he is worth the gate money just to watch him mesmerise defences.

Watch the League cup semi-final second leg at Turf moor, Burnley v Spurs. He turns the Spurs defenders inside out.
Also, watch him score the winner Burnley v Man United. Pity he jumped ship to Judas Ville just for the Money. However, most Burnley fans still view him as a legend.

I personally think his nounce and experience will make him a huge success in League One. We have given a lot of youngsters their first pro contracts this year and I am sure someone like Blake will be great for them to have around and learn from.
