DRFC Coppinger happy to stay

Doncaster Rovers midfielder James Coppinger says he is happy to stay at the Keepmoat stadium next season and try and help Rovers make a quick return to the championship.

Coppinger is the clubs longest serving player having signed from Exeter City in 2004 and despite the clubs relegation he says he will be happy to remain with the club.

Speaking in the Sheffield Star, Coppinger said, "I haven`t heard anything but you never know what is going to happen in football. But I would think the odds at the moment are on me still being here next season.

"It certainly wouldn`t bother me if I stayed here and helped try and get the club back into the Championship."


The 31 year old looked certain to be one of those making a move from the Keepmoat this summer with clubs reportedly interested in his services.

Rovers have admitted that they will need to lose the services of some of the highest earning players at the club as they look to reduce their wage bill following their relegation.

Last summer, Coppinger was the target of championship side Ipswich Town who made a £300,000 bid for the midfielder.

Rovers turned down the bid from Ipswich, who also failed in a bid to lure striker Billy Sharp at the same time.

Coppinger signed a new deal at Rovers last July until the summer of 2014 and he has now made over 300 appearances for the club.

I would love him to stay but I think Rovers will be desperate to offload a player who must be on a good contract after signing an improved deal only last summer.
