DRFC Saunders on the Ball in Rovers win

Doncaster Rovers kicked off their pre-season campaign with a 4-2 win at Cleethorpes Town.

The win saw manager Dean Saunders make a cameo appearance and he got in on the act with the third Rovers goal.

With Rovers lacking in numbers, assistant manager Brian Carey also played part in the game.

New signings David Cotterill and David Syers made their debuts, whilst Robbie Blake was missing with a thigh injury.

The side also included two trialists. Greg McDermott, who was released by Newcastle United at the end of last season and Amari Morgan Smith who was with non-league Luton Town last season.

Rovers led at half time thanks to a Chris Brown goal from close range.

Saunders made seven changes to his side at half time and Jordan Ball increased Rovers lead early in the second half from the penalty spot.

The Rovers boss came on late on and he was on hand to pick his spot after good work from Ball to make it 3-0.

Ball scored his second of the afternoon to make it 4-0 in the dying moments but there was still time for Cleethorpes to score twice and give the scoreline a false reflection of the game.

Rovers will once again be in Cleethorpes on Tuesday when they visit Grimsby Town for their second game of pre-season.

Rovers team:
Gary Woods (Jonathan Maxted), Jake McCormick, Liam Wakefield, George Friend (Brian Carey), James Husband (Dean Saunders), David Cotterill (Jordan Ball), Brian Stock (James Baxendale), David Syers (Martin Woods), Kyle Bennett (Paul Keegan), Amari Morgan Smith (Paddy Mullen), Chris Brown (Greg McDermott)
