DRFC Saunders enjoys Cleethorpes trip

Doncaster Rovers boss Dean Saunders said it was good to pull on a shirt again after scoring in Rovers opening pre-season win over Cleethorpes Town at the weekend.

Saunders and his assistant Brian Carey were forced to play with the squad down to the bare bones.

With only fifteen senior professionals currently at the club, Saunders and Carey played after Shelton Martis, James O`Connor, Tommy Spurr, Robbie Blake and James Coppinger all pulled out through either injury or illness.

The 48 year old, who finished playing in 2001 came off the bench to score Rovers third goal in their 4-2.

Saunders admitted when speaking in the Sheffield Star that the shirt was a bit tight and he was delighted to win a few quid of the Rovers bench after betting them that he would score. "It was nice to score; I`d forgotten what it was like to score in front of a crowd.

"The shirt was a bit tight, and I`m not in the best of condition but I will be in a couple of weeks time.

"It has been a good work-out and I`ve earned myself a few hundred quid so it`s been a good day for me all round."

Youngster Jordan Ball marked his senior debut with two goals and senior professional Chris Brown was also on target as Rovers marked their opening pre-season game with a comfortable win.

Rovers also included two trialists with Greg McDermott and Amari Morgan-Smith starting the second half.

Saunders will now prepare his squad for a return to Cleethorpes on Tuesday night when they travel to Blundell Park to face Grimsby Town.
