McKay experiement saves Rovers £250,000 in fees

The latest reports from the Football League state Doncaster Rovers spent just over £139,000 on agent fees during last season.

Last season saw the Willie McKay experiment at the Keepmoat stadium with the football agent bringing in well know experienced players to the club on a short-term basis, in a view to put them back into the shop window.

Rovers were reportedly paying McKay £100 a week as the well know agent brought in players such as Pascal Chimbonda, El Hadji Diouf, Herita Ilunga and Habib Beye to the club to try and help them avoid relegation.

Whilst the experiment ultimately failed with Rovers being relegated at the end of last season it seems it saved the club over a quarter of a million pound in agent`s fees.

The exact amount of £139,012 is significantly down on the £387,770 paid the previous season.

Rovers were involved in 49 transactions, the same as the previous season.

Last season saw Rovers almost double the amount of new transactions with 27 taking place compared to 14 the previous season.

West Ham led the way in the championship last season spending over seven times the amount Leeds paid. The hammers spent £4.3 million on 69 transactions.

Leicester City, Reading and Crystal Palace were the only other clubs to spend over £1 million during the season.

Only Barnsley spent less than Rovers in the championship last season, with the Oakwell club spending £124,888.

I think all the experiment achieved was to prove that bringing in a group of players whose only thing in common is that they want to play for a bigger better club, and expecting them to gel from day one, is not a winning strategy. Hopefully they never consider repeating the process.
