Rovers sign former Chelsea and Leeds youngster

Doncaster Rovers have signed former Chelsea and Leeds United midfielder Michael Woods on non-contract terms.

The midfielder has been without a club since being released by Yeovil Town at the end of last season.

Woods sprung to prominence at 16 when Chelsea were forced to pay Leeds United £5 million in compensation after Woods and Tom Taiwo moved from Elland Road to Stamford Bridge.

He made just two appearances for Chelsea in the 2006/07 season when he was just 16 but he has been plagued by long-term injuries to his ankle and knee in his short career.

Woods suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury and in his first appearance following his return, he suffered a dislocated ankle. The injuries saw him spend two and a half seasons on the sidelines and he contemplated retiring from the game.

Woods eventually returned and he had a short spell on loan at Notts County in the 2010/11 season where he made two appearances.

Chelsea eventually released him at the end of the 2010/11 season.

He failed to find a club at the start of last season before eventually joining Yeovil Town in February.

During his time at Huish Park, he made six appearances and he scored his first senior goal in the 3-1 win over Rochdale.

In his last appearance for the club, he was sent off in the home game with Stevenage after just 33 minutes for serious foul play.

Woods will wear the number 12 shirt during his time at the Keepmoat Stadium.
