DRFC George A True Friend To Rovers

DRFC George A True Friend To Rovers

Doncaster Rovers boss Dean Saunders has revealed that former defender George Friend forfeited cash owed to him by the club following his departure in the summer.

Friend joined Championship side Middlesbrough in the summer following Rovers relegation to League One.

Rovers had to clear out a large number of their high earners at the club as they looked to reduce their budget considerably following their relegation to League One.

Saunders says the defender was disappointed to leave the club in the summer and he gave up cash owed to him by the club as he understood the financial situation the club found themselves in following their relegation.

Speaking on Radio Sheffield, Saunders said, "George is a dream player to work with. He has given up some money because he knows the club had a budget cut.

"He wanted to go play in the League above which you can understand. He was really disappointed to leave because he thought he could help us get back up."

Friend spent two years at the Keepmoat, making 64 appearances for the club.

The 25 year old played 29 times for Rovers last season and he was named player and fans player of the year by the club.

Friend is enjoying life on Teesside, he has started 15 times for Middlesbrough so far this season, only missing the League Cup tie at Preston North End, and he has helped the side into third place in the Championship.

Nice to see things like this when the game is now so full of mercenaries who would quite happily see a club in financial difficulty as long as they got their over paid wage.

Not the first time a Donny player has set an example to the rest of the league, it`s time the media started to concentrate more on the good side of football !
