DRFC Jones - That was for the fans

Doncaster Rovers captain Rob Jones says the title was for the fans after a dramatic final day at Brentford.

Rovers won the title in dramatic circumstances after Brentford missed an injury time penalty, which would have seen them leapfrog Rovers into the automatic promotion places. Rovers broke down the other end after the miss and James Coppinger` s goal not only secured promotion but also the title after leaders Bournemouth were held to a goalless draw at Tranmere Rovers.

Jones spoke on the pitch after the final whistle and he admitted he always thought Brentford would miss the penalty.

Speaking on the Football League Show, Jones said, "We all put in a shift, not just today but for the whole of the season and it is for the fans.

"I always knew he was going to miss, I just knew it."

It ends a great season for Jones, who has become a cult figure at the Keepmoat following his arrival from Sheffield Wednesday last summer.

The 33-year-old led from the back for Rovers all season and he chipped in with 8 goals from defence.

His popularity amongst the fans saw them hold a 'Rob Jones day` against Walsall in February.

Since his arrival, he has also taken on the added responsibility of player coach following the departure of Dean Saunders in January and he gave the club a huge boost on the eve of the Brentford game when he signed a new deal with the club, keeping him at the Keepmoat until the summer of 2015.
