DRFC Ryan delighted with Dickov appointment

DRFC Ryan delighted with Dickov appointment

Doncaster Rovers chairman John Ryan says he is delighted with the appointment of Paul Dickov as the clubs new manager.

The club revealed Dickov this afternoon and Ryan admitted that the final decision was only made this morning after an exhausting interview process but he feels they have the right man to take the club forward.

Speaking on Radio Sheffield, Ryan said, "We went through a very exhausting process and we had some great applicants. We got down to the last two and we made the final decision this morning but I am delighted with the appointment of Paul Dickov.

"He is someone I have admired for a long time, I watched the way he handled Oldham against us and I was very impressed.

"We don`t want to be scurrying around the bottom of the table; we want to be up the league. He has some great contacts and I am sure he will bring in quality players, to what is already a powerful side.

"He is a very hard working guy, very motivated, very ambitious and that is just the same as we are."

The clubs decision to appoint Dickov is having a mixed reaction amongst fans but Ryan will point to his record of bringing in the right manager, who have not always the fans preferred choice in recent years.

Many questioned the appointment of Sean O`Driscoll in 2006, with not many fans knowing him outside of Bournemouth, where he had spent twenty years. O`Driscoll not only led the club to the championship, where they became an established club in his three full seasons in the division, he also led the club to their first domestic trophy when they won the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy in 2007.

Dean Saunders replaced O`Driscoll in September in 2011 after the club had picked up one point from their opening seven games of the season. He could not prevent relegation but it was Saunders, who rebuilt the squad during the summer of 2012, with a much-reduced budget, and they were sat joint top of League One when he left to take over the Wolverhampton Wanderers job in January. His hard work was finished off by Brian Flynn, who was also brought to the club by Saunders, who led the side to the League One title.

To those fans that are questioning the appointment. Let us trust the board`s decision to appoint Paul Dickov and get behind him as we prepare for life back in the championship.

John Ryan and the board have not let us down yet and I don`t think they ever will. Every manager at every club needs his fair share of luck but just as with Captain fantastic and his never say die team, a hardworking and determined club makes it`s own luck. It just takes belief and the dare, to dream !

A certain arrogance in the way he was speaking. I hope this one doesn't come back to bite us on the backside. Of all his appointments, only Penney and O'Driscoll were successful.
