DRFC Wellens deal hinges on club investment

Richie Wellens says he has been offered a deal by Doncaster Rovers but it depends on investment into the club.

Former Rovers midfielder Wellens has been training with the club for the past week and he played in their last pre-season friendly of the summer at Bradford City on Saturday.

Rovers have been reported to be on the verge of a 20 million cash injection recently and Wellens says it will be great to re-sign for his former club if it materialises.

'I've been training with my old club Doncaster. I've got a contract offer but it depends on investment coming into the club. If that materialises then great but it hasn't at the moment," Wellens told BBC Radio Leicester.

'There are four or five clubs interested and waiting to see what happens.'

Wellens spent two seasons at the Keepmoat between 2007 and 2009 and he helped the side win promotion to the championship. He made 97 appearances for Rovers before joining Leicester in the summer of 2009.

He was a regular in the foxes side until suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury towards the end of the 2011/12 season. The 33-year-old found first team opportunities limited at the King Power stadium last season and he spent a short spell on loan at Ipswich Town.

Rovers boss Paul Dickov, who played alongside Wellens at Leicester has been keen to bring in the midfielder since his arrival at the Keepmoat but Wellens said he was prepared to fight for his place at Leicester. That all changed last week when he was released by Leicester boss Nigel Pearson.
