DRFC Khumalo pleased to sign

DRFC Khumalo pleased to sign

Bongani Khumalo says he is pleased to have signed for Doncaster Rovers after joining the club on a season long loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

The 26-year-old has been training with Rovers for the past week and he played in the 2-1 win at Bradford City at the weekend.

The South African international, who is the current national captain, is now looking forward to the new season.

Speaking on the official website , Khumalo said, "I`m very pleased to be here. I`m very happy that things have worked out and I`m just looking forward to the start of the season."

The centre back started his career in South Africa starting his career at University of Pretoria before joining Supersport United.

His form for Supersport United and South Africa saw him getting attention from Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers before Tottenham Hotspur made the move to sign the defender in the January transfer window in 2011.

Khumalo signed for Tottenham for a fee in the region of £1.5 million on a four-and-half year deal.

Having failed to break into the Tottenham side in his early months at White Hart Lane, he joined Championship side Preston North End for the remainder of the season on loan, where he made six appearances, including the 1-1 draw at Doncaster.

The following season, he joined Championship side Reading on a season long loan but after making five appearances in the first month of the season, he failed to make another appearance for the royals and his loan was terminated in February.

Last season, he spent the season on loan with Greek Super League side Paok Salonika where he made 23 appearances.

Khumalo joins the club with Rovers defender Jamie McCombe expected to be sidelined for three months with a back injury and he is expected to partner Rob Jones at the heart of the Rovers defence when the season opens with a home game against Blackpool on Saturday.
