DRFC Dickov - We need to be more clinical

Doncaster Rovers boss Paul Dickov says his side need to be more clinical in the final third after seeing his side lose 3-1 to Blackpool on the opening day.

It was a disappointing start for the new Rovers boss although he felt the side played well enough to deserve something from the game.

"I thought for the majority of the game we competed and we played fairly well," Dickov told the official website .

"We need to be a little bit more clinical in the final third but it just goes to show that this is an unforgiving division."

Rovers looked like they were going to gain a point from the game when Rob Jones headed the side level on the hour after Steven Davies had fired Blackpool into a first half lead.

Chris Brown had missed a great chance to give Rovers and early lead when his header drifted just wide in the opening ten minutes and they were made to pay inside twenty minutes when Davies stabbed home at the second attempt after Ross Turnbull could only parry a Barry Ferguson shot.

Rovers tried to get back into the game before half time but Matthew Gilks was having an easy afternoon in the Blackpool goal with shots from David Cotterill and Mark Duffy going wide and Brown having another header easily saved.

Defender Rob Jones was the main threat for Rovers. He brought Rovers level with a firm header on the hour and he twice more came close to scoring in the second half.

Rovers were caught cold in the final few minutes. Firstly, Gary Mackenzie headed home from a corner and with Rovers chasing the game deep into stoppage time, Tom Ince had the simple task of passing the ball into an empty net with Turnbull coming forward for a corner.

It is now two weeks before Rovers next league game with Wigan Athletic being involved in the Charity Shield next weekend.

Rovers will welcome Blackburn Rovers to the Keepmoat and by then, Dickov will have hopefully have added a striker to the squad.
