'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Dickov missed out on Leeds striker in the summer

Doncaster Rovers boss Paul Dickov says he would have loved to sign Leeds United striker Matt Smith in the summer.

The duo worked together at Oldham Athletic last season, with Smith taking most of the plaudits for his goalscoring efforts against both Liverpool and Everton in the FA Cup.

Dickov first brought Smith into professional football when he signed him for Oldham in 2011 and he admits on the eve of today`s game that he would have been keen to bring him to the Keepmoat in the summer.

Speaking on the Doncaster Rovers official website , Dickov said, 'Matt is a player that I watched a lot when I was at Oldham, when he was in non-league football. He is a fantastic kid who wants to learn more and develop. To see him score goals at this level is a credit to him because he is not just a handful on the pitch but a great kid off it.

'I would have loved to have brought him here but at that time I had other priorities in other positions, so we lost him to Leeds. I hope he as lots of success but not until after Saturday!"

The 6`6" striker is likely to lead the Leeds attack alongside Ross McCormack this afternoon and Dickov will be hoping that the Doncaster defence can handle the giant striker. Smith scored his first Leeds goal when the two sides met in the League Cup earlier this season and he took his tally to six for the season last weekend with a goal against Watford.

We just need to make sure we keep him quiet today. I fancy Khumalo to sort him out.
But we didn't... He would have been good for us top. I thought he looked good.
