DRFC Rovers after free-scoring non-league striker

Doncaster Rovers are being linked with a move for local non-league striker Leon Mettam.

Sky Sports are linking Rovers, along with Sheffield United and Peterborough United with the Worksop Town striker who has already scored 36 goals this season.

Having started his career in the Football League with Lincoln City the 27-year-old has spent the majority of his career in the non-league with Stamford, Corby Town and Gainsborough before joining Worksop Town in 2012.

He scored 23 goals last season for the Northern Premier League side in his first season at Worksop and he netted his fourth hat-trick of this season on Boxing Day for Worksop to take his tally for the season to 36 goals.

Rovers boss Paul Dickov is desperate to add to his attacking options having seen his side score just one goal in their last five games, that being an own goal at Derby County.

On loan striker Federico Macheda is set to return to Manchester United after the game with Queens Park Rangers on New Year`s Day and both Chris Brown and Billy Paynter are sidelined through injury.

Dickov started with 19-year-old striker Alex Peterson in the 0-0 draw with Millwall last time out.

People are quickly seeing the negatives because he is non-league. Ian Wright became one of the countries best strikers of the modern era after starting life in non-league football and Dwight Gayle and Charlie Austin are both recent success stories.
