'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Talks start as Dickov given funds to strenghten

Doncaster Rovers boss Paul Dickov says he has spoken with midfielder Richie Wellens and his agent about extending his current deal at the club.

Wellens is out of contract at Rovers after the game at Queens Park Rangers on New Year`s Day and Dickov is hopeful they can sort out a deal with the influential midfielder who is in his second spell at the club.

Speaking on the official website , Dickov said, "I spoke to Richie this morning and his agent and we are hopeful that we can get it done. Richie wants to stay, he has a big affection for the club and he is enjoying his football and all the signs are that we can get it sorted out."

Dickov is desperate to add to his squad having seen them pick up just one point from their last five games to stand just two points above the relegation places.

The small squad has been hit by injuries recently with nine players sidelined for the game with Ipswich Town on Boxing Day. Five of those are long-term absentees and not expected to return until the end of January and the Rovers boss says he has been given the go-ahead by the board to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window. "We are trying to bring players in, there is no secret on that, the board have given me the go ahead to go and do that which is great," continued Dickov.

"The board have been fantastic, I spoke to Dick after the game and I`m always speaking to Gavin, we are looking to get the right players in for the right price".

Rovers are set to lose on loan Yun Suk-Young, Federico Macheda, Enda Stevens and Reece Wabara in January, who all come to the end of their current loan deals.

He must bring in two or three early. A striker is needed as well as a defender with the injuries mounting.
