DRFC Wellens close to signing 18-month deal

Doncaster Rovers boss Paul Dickov says he is hoping Richie Wellens will sign a new 18-month deal with the club before the game with Stevenage on Saturday.

Wellens played the final game of his current short-term deal for Rovers against Queens Park Rangers today and Dickov says there are just a few things left to sort out.

Speaking on BBC Radio Sheffield, Dickov said, "We are hoping to get an 18-month contract to him; we just need to get it signed and we just have a few fine details to sort out.

"If I didn`t think he was going to stay, he wouldn`t have played today and he wouldn`t have been the captain.

"We all want him to stay. We would have liked to have got it sorted out quicker but I am hoping it can be sorted out in time for the Stevenage game on Saturday."

The 33-year-old has missed just two games for Rovers this season since his return to the club in the summer following his release by Leicester City.

Wellens signed a short-term deal with the club until the end of August that was extended until January 1st on the final day of the August transfer window.

The influential midfielder is in his second spell at the club having helped the side win promotion to the championship in his first stint with the club.

Wellens is closing in on a century of appearances for the club having made 97 appearances during his two stints at the Keepmoat.

I have a feeling he will not be signing. A few clubs reportedly interested in him and why would we bring Syers back if he was staying.
