Board want team capable of promotion challenge

A spokesman for Doncaster Rovers says they have told manager Paul Dickov they want a team capable of challenging for promotion next season.

Rovers suffered final day heartache in the championship as they were relegated in stoppage time as Birmingham City equalised in their game at Bolton Wanderers to leapfrog Rovers on goal difference.

Having made an instant return as League One champions following their previous relegation, the board are once again looking to make a quick return.

Speaking in the South Yorkshire Times , a spokesperson for the club said, "On Friday, Paul Dickov is presenting his target list of acquisitions to the board.

"The brief has been made clear, in that it has to be a promotion chasing team.

"On Friday, the board will discuss Paul`s targets and will work with Paul to set a budget that is capable of achieving the brief.

"As last season, Paul will have the support from the board to achieve the targets that have been set for the team."

Rovers released seven players following their relegation and Dickov will hope to sort out deals with a number of players who are out of contract or have terms written into their contract that allowed them to leave the club if they were relegated from the championship.

I don't think the issue is having a team capable of promotion from League One. The bigger problem is being able to afford a team capable of staying in the Championship.
