DRFC Paynter - I wasn't given a chance

Released Doncaster Rovers striker Billy Paynter says he feels he wasn`t given a chance by manager Paul Dickov.

Rovers released Paynter at the end of the season after featuring just twelve times for Dickov and he spent the second half of the season on loan at Sheffield United.

The 29-year-old, who had finished his first season at the Keepmoat as the highest scorer for the club as they won the League One title, had turned down loan moves away from the club during the first half of the season as he looked to fight his way into the side but he admits he had to leave when he knew it wasn`t going to happen for him at the Keepmoat.

Speaking in the South Yorkshire Times , Paynter said, "I wanted to play but the gaffer had other ideas.

"That`s football. It wasn`t a case of us being at each other`s throats.

"I came off the bench and scored against Leeds in the cup early in the season and thought I`d found my way in.

"There was never any point when I was told why I wasn`t getting my chance.

"I just carried on working hard in training and trying to force my way in.

"I turned down loan moves because I wanted to fight for my place but it became clear that I wasn`t going to get a chance which is why I agreed to go to Sheffield United."

Paynter`s loan move to Sheffield United proved unsuccessful as he failed to score in thirteen appearances for the blades. Paynter came off the bench in seven of his thirteen appearances as he struggled to break into the United side who were doing well in the FA Cup as well as pushing their way up the League One table having been in the relegation zone when he arrived.

The Liverpool born striker is now looking for the tenth club of his career having started his career with Port Vale in 2001 and having made almost 450 career appearances.
