Rovers closing in on deal for experienced defender
Doncaster Rovers are closing in on a deal to sign former Everton and Huddersfield Town defender Peter Clarke according to reports.
The 32-year-old defender was released by Huddersfield Town at the end of last season and it is believed that Rovers are leading the chase to sign Clarke who is also interesting fellow League One sides Barnsley, Preston North End and Fleetwood Town.
Clarke is a vastly experienced defender with over 500 career appearances after starting his career with Everton in 2001.
He had loan spells at Blackpool, Port Vale and Coventry City before moving to Blackpool in 2004, captaining the side during his two-years at Bloomfield Road as well as being named the clubs player of the year in his first season.
He joined Championship side Southend United in 2006, he spent three-years at Roots Hall making over 100 appearances, and he was named the clubs player of the year in his final season with the club before signing for Huddersfield in 2009. He was twice named player of the season during his five years with the terriers as well as being named in the League One team of the year in the 2010/11 season. Clarke was part of the side that won promotion from League One in 2012 and he has been a regular in the side in their two seasons back in the championship before his release at the end of last season.
Rovers are looking to bolster their defensive options ahead of the new season after Gabriel Tamas and Abdoulaye Meite both left the club following their relegation at the end of last season.
