Former Manchester United youngster joins on trial

Doncaster Rovers are giving a trial to former Manchester United academy goalkeeper Ben Williams.

Williams joined fellow goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown on trial for Rovers in their latest pre-season friendly at Lincoln City on Saturday.

The 31-year-old played the first half and he kept a clean sheet in the game that finished 2-0 to Lincoln.

Manchester United released Williams in 2004 after failing to make a season appearance for the Old Trafford club. During his time with Manchester United, he had loan spells at Chesterfield and Crewe Alexandra before he signed a permanent deal with Crewe in 2004.

He spent four-years at Gresty Road where he made 148 appearances before joining Carlisle United. He spent a season with Carlisle before joining Colchester United. He went on to make over 100 appearances for Colchester before joining Scottish Premier League side Hibernian in 2012.

Williams was a regular for Hibernian in his two-years at Easter Road and he was the supporters` player of the year in his first season. Williams was released at the end of last season following the sides relegation and he has now joined Rovers hoping to earn a permanent deal at the Keepmoat.

Rovers currently have just youngster Jonathan Maxted signed at the Keepmoat with Ross Turnbull now out of contract.
