A war of words has broken out between the agent of young goalkeeper Jonathan Maxted and Doncaster Rovers boss Paul Dickov.
Maxted was out of contract at the end of last season but he looked set to remain at the Keepmoat after returning for pre-season training and playing in the first pre-season game at Bradford Park Avenue.
The 20-year-old then left the club to have a trial with League One rivals Walsall, which didn`t work out, being released by the Saddlers after just one day with the midlands club.
Dickov admits he wanted Maxted to stay with the club but following the players decision to go to Walsall for a trial, they are now looking elsewhere.
Speaking in the South Yorkshire Times , Dickov said, "He did ask me that if he went down and it didn`t work out, could he come back and I said no," Dickov said following Rovers` 2-0 pre-season friendly loss to Lincoln City on Saturday.
"I don`t think it`s worked out with Walsall either.
"Jonny`s a good kid, just a bit naive at times.
"We told him we wanted him to stay here and progress the way he has come on last year.
"He, or more so his agent, thought it would be a good idea to go down to Walsall but it`s not worked out so we`re looking at other options now."
Maxted is a product of the Doncaster Rovers youth team and he was a regular on the bench last season as back up to Ross Turnbull and Sam Johnstone and since turning professional at the Keepmoat he has been an unused substitute on 76 occasions whilst still waiting to make his senior debut.
The agent of Maxted, Will Arnett, sees it slightly differently and he says his player has been waiting since the end of last year for the club to get in touch with him about his future with the club.
Arnett told The South Yorkshire Times, "He [Maxted] was in fact in receipt of a letter from the club at the end of the season stating that he would be made free for trial following the expiration of his contract.
"Despite numerous efforts to speak to the manager since December 2013 regarding Jon`s contract situation, the manager has not once been in contact with either myself or Jon to discuss the matter.
"Jon spent six years at Doncaster Rovers and would have certainly stayed on the right terms.
"As the club told him he was available for trial he visited Walsall for the day which he informed the club.
"When he asked the goalkeeping coach Paul Gerrard if he could return the following day to training at Doncaster Rovers, he was told not to bother."
Following the decision to end association with Maxted, Rovers have brought in experienced goalkeepers Ben Williams and Jamie Ashdown on trial, they both featured in the defeat at Lincoln City on Saturday, and the pair has joined the squad during their pre-season training trip to Portugal this week.
Dickov is still also hopeful of keeping last season`s number one Ross Turnbull. The former Chelsea keeper was a regular in the side last season until injury forced him out for the remainder of the season in January.
