'If It's Football, It's Vital'

League Officials Refute Ref Claims

In an interview for Yorkshire television, Premiership referee Mark Halsey claimed that Rovers asked the Football League for him to officiate the opening game at the Keepmoat Stadium.

A Football League spokesman said: 'It's absolute rubbish that Doncaster asked for Mark Halsey to be the referee for Monday's match.

'For high-profile and derby matches in the Football League it's common practice for Premiership referees to be appointed.

'It is also considered beneficial for clubs outside the Premiership to have top-flight referees in charge from time to time.'

I heard that and thought I wouldn't be very happy if I was a Huddersfield fan.

At least nowadays the level of ref that we get is far higher than during our conference days.
