'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Gillingham Boss Post-Match Comments

Ronnie Jepson talks about the Gill's performance against Doncaster Rovers.

"I am gutted for the lads today. We were playing a good side in Doncaster Rovers and they hRonnie Jepsonave got good quality all over the pitch but I thought we were the miles better team for the first 80 minutes. We got done by a goal from a set-piece and that killed us off and gave them a lift. The amount of balls we got into the box today, they just didn't drop. We haven't had a problem scoring goals this season but it just wasn't going to drop for us. If the lads give that sort of commitment and effort every week, we'll be okay. Today, if we had played until half-past five, we probably still wouldn't have scored. It was one of those days.

'The conditions for both sides were poor, to be fair. There was the swirling wind and I thought we got to grips with it a little better in the second half. The first 20 to 25 minutes of the second half, I thought we absolutely mullered them. You have got to give Doncaster credit for the way that they defended but you would expect to get one or two goals though with the amount of balls we got into their box.

'It was a pretty open first-half but you would expect that with Doncaster as they have a bit of quality. My lads are gutted, as make no bones about it, they deserved something from the game. Full credit to Doncaster for the way that they kept going and got that goal from a set-piece.

'They (Gillingham players) thought there may have been a handball but I cannot make a judgement on that from where I was standing. When you see five or six of them jump up like that, I think it tells a story in itself. We have got no complaints about the ref as I think he refereed it very well today. That one decision, sometimes they go for you and sometimes they don't. I thought we got enough balls into the box today to scores goals, but it just never happened.

'I thought Brent Sancho was smashing at rightback today and he was Ronnie Jepsonone of our better players. Like I said, we got undone from a set-piece for the first and Danny Spiller, I don't know what he was thinking about on the far side, he has tried to make an impression by keeping the ball in play, has lost it and the shot has gone on to take a deflection. That just about weighed the day up.

'We were always going to be pressing once they scored their first but when you have had so much possession in their half, and they go and get a goal like that, it takes the wind out of your sails a little bit. You have got to put things into perspective though. Look at where we are and what we are up against. The quality they have got, we made a good account of ourselves for 80 minutes today. We are up and down a bit. In an ideal world, I'd like a few more players in, and hopefully that will be the case. I am the first to knock my players if they are not at it but they gave 100 per cent to the cause today and it just wasn't their day today.

'Matt Jarvis was rubbish today, wasn't he? Put that in the paper! No, Matty was tremendous today. At times, we cannot play the ball to him quick enough. When we do get the ball to him, in the right areas, he is unstoppable at times. The one he rolled across the goal, you dream of opportunities like that. Mark Bentley has tried to get there but it just wasn't to be today. I've hammered the lads in the past, if I think it is right to, but today I think they gave their all against a good side in this league.'
