DRFC Former Doncaster Defender Bill Green Has Died

Former Doncaster Rovers defender Bill Green has died at the age of 66.

The vastly experienced defender had been working as a chief scout at Premier League side Southampton until his untimely death after a short illness.

Green made almost 500 career appearances with Hartlepool, Carlisle United, West Ham United, Peterborough United and Chesterfield before joining Doncaster in 1983.

Billy Bremner brought the defender to Belle Vue as he looked to add experience to his squad and bounce straight back from the previous seasons relegation.

Green made 11 appearances for Doncaster and he was part of the side that won promotion to the Third Division in 1983/84 but his season was curtailed by a serious knee injury that forced him to retire from the game.

He moved into management and he had spells with Scunthorpe United and Buxton as well as a short spell as caretaker manager at Sheffield Wednesday.

Green then turned his attention to scouting and after spells with Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday, Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers he joined Southampton in 2011, where he worked until his recent death.
