DRFC Rovers In Negotiations To Sign Midfielder
Doncaster Rovers boss Darren Ferguson says the club are now in negotiations to bring Ben Whiteman back to the club from Sheffield United on a permanent deal.
Whiteman, who spent the first half of the season on loan at the Keepmoat Stadium, returned to Bramall Lane last week after blades boss Chris Wilder recalled him after the two clubs had agreed to extend his loan deal.
Wilder had to recall Whiteman after suffering a number of injuries in midfield but the Championship club have now signed Ryan Leonard from Southend United and they are hoping to bring in another midfielder before the Steel City derby against Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night.
The arrival of reinforcements in midfield for Wilder will allow Whiteman to return to the Keepmoat and Ferguson wants to sort out a deal to bring the young midfielder back.
"We`re in negotiations with Sheffield United," Ferguson told The Sheffield Star.
"Obviously they`ve got a couple in and it`s more about negotiating a permanent now as opposed to a loan.
"I always felt when he went back there would be a lot of interest in him and I always felt it might turn into a permanent move, which suits me really anyway.
"The boy really wants to come back, which is a big help, so we just have to see how it goes with the negotiations. If we can agree the fee and personal terms we`d love to have him in before the weekend.
"That`s what we`re trying to do but it takes longer to do a permanent than a loan because there`s different things that come into it."
Whiteman made 30 appearances for Doncaster in the first half of the season, scoring seven goals, including a hat-trick against Southend United. The young midfielder had also scored in his last two games for the club against Rochdale and Peterborough United.
